The Christmas Spirit at Palumbo
Christmas celebrations at Palumbo in Malta will have special meaning for local children as the shipyard hosts a Christmas party in the ex smithery building within the super yacht facility. Over 160 youngsters have been invited to the event, including employee’s offspring and children from a variety of institutes including The Sisters of Mother Theresa. The event, that is becoming a yearly tradition at Palumbo, will be memorable for all who attend as gifts are distributed, live music played, and Father Christmas makes a special appearance on his sleigh. Artificial snow will add to the magical atmosphere, and each child will have an opportunity to be photographed with Santa Clause himself. Members of the Palumbo family will be attending the party, a rare opportunity to socialise with employees and their families in a relaxed environment away from the pressures of work.
ICON YACHTS VISIT PALUMBO MALTA
Staff at the Palumbo shipyard in Malta this week have been treated to the spectacular sight of Motor Yacht “A” tied up to the side of the dock. The 119m Blohm and Voss megayacht made the news when she was launched in 2008 not just for her size, but also for her avant garde design from the drawing board of Philippe Stark. Her imposing reverse bow, striking superstructure, and unmistakeable profile have made her one of the most recognisable super yachts in the world and she has chosen Palumbo’s Malta facility to perform winter works this year. Whilst in the shipyard, Motor Yacht “A” will take advantage of Palumbo’s enviable facilities to scaffold and protect the entire yacht and respray her, along with some other routine jobs. Motor Yacht “A” is not the only iconic yacht to grace the shores of Palumbo in Malta though, as the distinctive Sailing Yacht “Maltese Falcon” joins her to benefit from Palumbo’s expertise. With her 10 year Lloyds survey due, specialists at the busy shipyard are fully engaged in the various jobs and surveys needed to satisfy the requirements of this world class registry. Built in 2006, the 88m Perini Navi yacht made the headlines for her innovative rig, sleek lines, and sumptuous interior. In 2007 she won the World Superyachts Awards for Sailing Yacht of the Year, Best Sailing Yacht in the 45m + range, Best Interior Design on a Sailing Yacht, and a host of other prestigious industry honours and accolades. The owner’s choice of service yard is a clear indication of their desire maintain this high level of achievement.
NEW ACCOMMODATION BUILDING • April 2015
In addition to the remarkable equipment and facilities that have made Palumbo Malta the first choice for the world’s super yachts in need of service, repair, and refit work, the shipyard has also become notable for it’s focus on crew comfort. Recognising the difficulties that a service stop can create for young and energetic crew members, Palumbo Malta has developed a Yacht Club that addresses this issue. With a crew gymnasium, dining rooms, TV rooms, and a games room every effort is made to ensure that crew members can relax after often intensely busy periods at sea. In April of this year Palumbo announced the restructuring of a building dedicated for crew accommodation, each room benefitting from a sea view along with en suite bathroom, TV, wi-fi, mini bar and modern furniture. With Malta enjoying clement weather for most of the year, Palumbo has also provided for outside relaxation areas. Barbecue facilities are available along with seating areas, and crew are able to network and socialise in a tranquil environment with their colleagues and other industry professionals. The initiative started by Palumbo in Malta is spreading throughout the network, with the Marseille based facility Palumbo ITM making significant modernisation plans including the addition of a gymnasium for the ever increasing crew members that are passing through the shipyard.
